Eagle Grove – Marvin “Bus” Johnson

Marvin William Johnson, Jr., the son of Marvin W. and Bernice T. (Butz) Johnson, Sr., was born June 16, 1929 in Eagle Grove, Iowa. With the exception of two years in Tama, Iowa, he spent his life in Eagle Grove where he was raised and educated. Marvin served in the United States Army Signal Service Battalion from April 1951 until April 1953. He received his training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Camp Gordon, Georgia and was stationed in Seoul Korea for 16 months. On June 21, 1953, Marvin was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Stearns in Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove. Marvin was employed by Beam Manufacturing, Franklin Manufacturing and White Consolidated Industries (now Electrolux) in Webster City for over 25 years and was a proud member of UAW Local #442, serving on negotiating committees and as a union steward. He then worked for Iowa Public Service at the Power Plant in Eagle Grove and Mid-American Energy as a meter reader, retiring 1982. Marvin enjoyed gardening, woodworking and working with metal.

Marvin passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Careage of Clarion at the age of 81 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John G. Johnson and brother-in-law, Ramon Parrish. Survivors include his wife, Gwen of Eagle Grove; daughters, Cheryl Johnson of Fort Dodge and Susan DeCrane and husband Mark of West Lafayette, IN; sons, John Johnson and wife Coleen of Belmond and Joe Johnson and Sandy Aldrich of Mason City; 5 grandchildren: Marjon Payvandi, Olivia DeCrane, Kjersti Johnson, Taylor Johnson and Halley Johnson; 3 step-grandchildren: Kenneth King, Keith King and Hana Aldrich; a step-great-grandson, Kaleb King; 4 sisters, Virginia Parrish of Jewell, Dolores Wergeland and husband Marvin of Hardy, Marlene Vorland and husband Kenny of Hardy and Charlene Baker and husband Duane of Scranton; a brother, Bernard Johnson and wife Marlene of Moberly, MO; a sister-in-law, Joyce Johnson of Ankeny and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 10:30AM at United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Mike Agnew officiating. Visitation is Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials will be left to the discretion of the family.
