Charles Stewart Churchill, son of Malcolm Stewart Churchill and Carrie Calista Henderson Churchill, was born in Darlington, Wisconsin, on Feb 22, 1880, where he grew to young manhood. Mr. Churchill was a private of Co. D. of the first regiment of Wisconsin volunteers enrolled on the 14th day of May 1898 at the age of 18, and was stationed at Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Churchill came to Clarion in October of 1908 and went railroading with the CGW RR. He made his last run on Sunday, December 12, 1942, after serving the company for 35 years. He hired out as a fireman in January 1909 and was promoted to engineer in October 1913. He continued in that capacity until his retirement. He also was insurance secretary for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for five years. In his early life Mr. Churchill attended the Methodist Church. At the time of his death he was affiliated with the United Spanish War Veterans Chas. Brown Camp 9 at Fort Dodge; Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers; honorary member of American Legion Post No. 246 at Clarion; honorary member of Veterans of Foreign wars George Foster Post No. 2612 of Clarion.
