October 26, 1936 -- March 23, 2010

John Welden, 74, of Iowa Falls, Iowa died Wednesday, March 23, 2010 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Family will be receiving friends an hour before service at 9:30 a.m.

John was born October 26, 1936 to Neil and Julia (Cole) Welden of Ames, Iowa. After graduating from Ames High School and Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa he became an educator, first in Buffalo Center, Iowa for three years and then in Iowa Falls for thirty-two years. He retired in 1994. On June 9, 1967, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Prull in Kanawha, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Elizabeth and David. Until a few years before his death, John enjoyed playing tennis and golf and riding his bicycle around town and to work. He also spent time at the Ellsworth College Library and the Barlow Library. He and his family enjoyed traveling, particularly in his later years with his wife going to Elderhostels. John served on a number of local civic organizations. He was on the Iowa Falls City Council, Library Board, Park Board and Planning and Zoning Commission. He also served in many capacities at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter John, Beth and Mallory Pierce of Hibbing, Minnesota, a step grandson Drake, and son, daughter-in-law, grandson, granddaughter Dave, Lori, Cole, and Abbey Welden of Marshalltown, Iowa. He is also survived by six cousins: Mary Lou Nuessen of Quincy, Illinois, Kae Leffler of Birmingham, Michigan, Faith Enriquez of Seattle, Washington, E. (Skeeter) Oleson of Dows, Iowa, Catherine McCord of Iowa Falls and Margy Chamberlin of Ames, Iowa.

John's body is being donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Memorials should be directed to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa, the Barlow Library or First United Methodist Church.
