TUCSON, Ariz. — Richard L Newgaard, 72, passed away March 6, 2011, after a long illness in Tucson, Ariz. Richard was born in Fairmont, Minn., on July 9, 1938, and attended high school in Des Moines, Iowa. After serving in the United States Navy, Richard returned to Iowa and attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy starting his law enforcement career as an officer with the Iowa Falls Police Department. He advanced to the rank of chief of police for both the Madrid Police Department and the Kanawha Police Department, where he served for 12 years, and retired after a 25-year career in law enforcement.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years June Newgaard, brother Tom Newgaard of Des Moines, sister JeanAnn Newgaard of Conoga Park, Calif., son Gene Newgaard and wife Kelly of Iowa Falls, son Paul Newgaard and wife Sandy of Louisiana, son Chris Newgaard and wife Heather of Tucson, Ariz, son Rick Newgaard of Cedar Falls, step-daughter Kim Martinez and husband Dan of Kanawha, step-son Rory Johnson of Belmond, step-son Eric Johnson and wife Marilee of Nevada, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his father Otis Newgaard, step-father Francis Poole, mother Ruby Poole, brother Ronald, step-son Tony Johnson and step-son Ronnie Johnson.
