Funeral services for Gladys Mae Detmering were held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Wesley with Reverend Denise Group officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Gladys Mae Detmering was born Feb. 11, 1921, at LuVerne, a daughter of Orville and Jesse (Olinger) Alexander. She graduated from LuVerne High School in 1939. Gladys worked for a short time in DeKalb, Ill., before being united in marriage to George Detmering on June 18, 1942, in Bethany, Miss. Gladys and George farmed at LuVerne until 1952, when they moved to a farm northwest of Wesley. They farmed there until 1980 when they built a home and moved into Wesley. She worked at the Corwith -Wesley community schools as a secretary for 12 years.
She was an active member of the Methodist Church in Wesley, where she was organist, as well as a Sunday school teacher and was active in many community activities. Gladys prided herself in her homemade chocolate cake and her raisin cream pie.
George and Gladys moved to Mason City in 2000, to be closer to their family. George passed away on July 11, 2002, and Gladys continued living in their condo in Mason City with her dog, Buffy, with the 24-hour, seven days a week care of her daughters and granddaughters. In September 2005, she moved to the Heritage Care Center Alzheimer's Unit in Mason City. Gladys died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87.
Gladys is survived by her three daughters, Linda Kay and Ronald Rippentrop; Vicki Lee and Jerry Als; Kathy Jean and Daniel Tresemer. all of Mason City; her grandchildren, Shelley Huebner, Heidi and Greg Rippentrop; Casey and Kelly Als; Brad Tresemer and Kim Ryan. She also has 14 great-grandchildren, Chris and Jamie Huebner, Nick and Zack Solum, Caleb and Matt Rippentrop, Gavin Als, Jordan, Brock and C.J. Tresemer, Ali, Amanda, Tracey and Chris Ryan. Also surviving is her sister, Irma and Glenn Wigans of Humboldt and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George; sisters, Evelyn and Marvel; brothers, Everett and Vernon.
