Waterloo, IA -- Dennis Cullinan, 59, of Waterloo passed away Friday, February 25, 2011. Dennis was a teacher at Ames High School. Memorial services are planned for 11 a.m., on Saturday, March 5, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cullinan; daughters, Shannon (Josh) Peek and Casey Cullinan; son, Chad Cullinan; grandson, Samuel Peek; mother, Erma Cullinan; brothers, Scott (Mary) Cullinan and Barry Cullinan; sister, Vicki (Pete) Nily; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Cullinan; and brother, Kevin Cullinan. Dennis was born May 17, 1951, to Dale and Erma (Schroeder) Cullinan of Clarion, Iowa. In lieu of flowers and memorials, the family requests donations in his name to the William R. Bliss Cancer Center at Mary Greeley Medical Center, 1111 Duff Avenue, Ames, IA 50010.

WATERLOO, IA - Dennis Cullinan, 59, of Waterloo, died Friday, Feb. 25, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home. He was born May 17, 1951, in Clarion, son of Dale and Erma Schroeder Cullinan. Mr. Cullinan was a teacher at Ames High School, Ames. Survived by: his wife Barbara; two daughters, Shannon (Josh) Peek and Casey Cullinan; a son, Chad; a grandson, Samuel Peek; his mother; two brothers, Scott (Mary) and Barry; a sister, Vicki (Pete) Nily; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: his father; and a brother, Kevin. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. The family will receive friends after the services at a luncheon in the fellowship hall of the church. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball is in charge of arrangements. Former Ames High coach Cullinan dies

Dennis Cullinan, an Ames High School teacher and former coach, died this morning, according to a news release from the Ames Community School District.

“Cullinan was a highly respected and appreciated classroom teacher, who touched the lives of countless students and staff during his career,” Valerie Terando, director of school, community and media relations, said on behalf of the district. “We are deeply saddened and he will be truly missed.”

Cullinan taught government, politics and advanced placement psychology. He had been on leave this semester reportedly due to recurring health problems.

A former basketball coach in Ames, Decorah, North Fayette, Nashua and Southeast Polk, Cullinan’s 30-year record was 362-245. He was honored with the Don Logan Award at last year’s boy’s state basketball tournament by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
