January 27, 1922 -- February 3, 2011

PERHAM, Minn. - Mrs. Margaret Adelia "Dee" Laurent Champlin, 89, longtime resident of Vincent, Iowa and most recently of Perham, MN, died at Perham Memorial Hospital early Thursday morning, February 3 from complications of a fall. Following cremation, private services will be held in Perham and Vincent.

Surviving are daughters Karen (Pete) Puetz, Waukesha, WI; Teresa (Tom) Elkin, Perham, MN; and Peg Hols, Ft Dodge, IA; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents Edward and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Laurent; husband D. R. (Bob) Champlin; brothers Francis, Bernard, Donald and Charles; and sisters Mary and Genevieve.

Dee Champlin was born January 27, 1922 in Webster County, Iowa. She attended rural elementary school at Newark Township and graduated Eagle Grove High School in 1939. She served 16 months in the U.S. Naval Reserve during WW II. After the war, she married D. R. Champlin in St. Joseph's Church at Duncombe, IA on December 10, 1945. Dee was an active member in St. John's Guild, charter member of Waves North Iowa Lakes Unit #110, Waves National, Ft. Dodge Chapter of AARP, RSVP, and member/past president of the Perham Senior Center. As a ship's mate barber at Camp Elliott, San Diego, CA, she said "I had hoped to become a mechanic and was very disappointed when I didn't."

Known for her energy, compassion and quick wit, Dee enjoyed her family, dancing, reading, golf, knitting, crocheting, fishing and playing cards, especially 500 Rummy. She also liked shopping, jewelry, shoes, clothes and the color red. Memorials may be left to St. Henry's Area Catholic School, Perham, MN and Kinship of the Perham Area.
