Rient Stoppelmoor, age 96, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Si and Mary (Henrichs) Stoppelmoor on March 27, 1913, rural Rowan, Iowa. He received his education from a rural country school near Allison, Iowa. On November 24, 1936, Rient was united in marriage with Marie Reints at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on a farm one mile north of Parkersburg. Rient worked for Butler County, John Deere and then farmed until 1953 when they moved to town. Following their move Rient worked as a mechanic at Kyhl’s Chevrolet Garage in Parkersburg and then worked with heavy equipment at various companies, but mostly at Assink’s Sand and Gravel in Cedar Falls, Iowa and retired in 1987.
Rient was a member of the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. His biggest interest was his family especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed attending all of their activities. He also loved spending many hours mowing with his John Deere mower and going fishing up to Minnesota at the cabin.
Rient died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at the Allison Care Center in Allison, Iowa, of cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie on April 14, 1998; his parents; five sisters, Mary Stoppelmoor, Ella Heeren, Grace Franken, Minnie Stoppelmoor and Mattie Stoppelmoor; and seven brothers, Rudolph, Henry, John, George, Fred, Walt and Harm. Rient is survived by two daughters, Donis (Kenny) Smith of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Janice (Bob) Johnson of Parkersburg, Iowa; six grandchildren, Kim (Jeff) Thompson, Scott (Carol) Smith, Terry (Deb) Johnson, Sherry (Greg) Prohaska, Mike (Kristin) Johnson and Jim (Janet) Johnson; fourteen great-grandchildren, two great great-granddaughters; and three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Reints of Parkersburg, Iowa, Frances Reints of Parkersburg, Iowa and Darlene Reints of Greenfield, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2009, at the First Congregational Church with burial at the Oak Hill Cemetery both in Parkersburg. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg and are in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed Cedar Valley Hospice.
