ROCHESTER, MN — John Gerald Smidt was born, in Kanawha, Iowa, on Sept. 20, 1932, and bravely lost his battle with cancer on Jan. 23, 2011. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Tillie Smidt, and brother-in-law, Paul Wessels. He is survived by his wife Jo Smidt of Rochester; as well as his sister Anna Wessels of Denver, and sister Edna (John) Crum of California; brothers, Carl (Ella Mae) of Colorado Springs; and Herman (Sandy) of Denver. He is also survived by his children John Smidt of Omaha, Jeff Smidt (Madonna) of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Julie (Randy) Noltee of Rochester, Jola Smidt Tovar of Rochester, and James (Melissa) Smidt of Rochester. He is survived by two adopted daughters, Josie Schaffer and JoAnne Smidt; 14 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and foster children.

John was a friendly kind-hearted person. He loved to talk to everyone. He enjoyed his family, sports, garage sales, caring for foster children, and eating at Grandma's Kitchen. He loved the Lord and listening to gospel music. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, 1002 16th St. S.E., Rochester, on Jan. 27, 2011 at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family.
