Irene Barkema, 88, of Webster City, died Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral & Cremation Center with Rev. Joe Lambert officiating. Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. A visitation will be held on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Irene Hilpipre daughter of August and Fannie Emmenderfor Hilpipre was born on July 31, 1922 on her parents farm east of Woolstock. She received her education from the Woolstock area rural school. On March 25, 1942 she married Raymond Barkema in Bethany, Missouri. The couple farmed north of Jewell until 1968, when they moved to Jewell, then Stanhope, and then retiring in Webster City. Mr. Barkema died on March 3, 1997. She had been currently residing at Crestview Senior Living.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Vern Peterson of Ames; Raejean and Hubert Bickelhaupt of Story City; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Thurman) Lappin; brother, Marcel Hilpipre; sister and brother-in-law, Erma and Don Flygstad all of Webster City. In addition to her husband Raymond, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Nixon Cox; sisters, Elsie Story, Erma Stuhmer, and Hortense Mortenson; brothers, Glen, Edmond, and Clarence Hilpipre and 3 siblings in infancy. Irene was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Stanhope.
