Wendell Pelz, 86, Blairsburg, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ-Congregational at Blairsburg, with Rev. John Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Blairsburg Cemetery, north of Blairsburg. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. Monday and at the church after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Wendell Claire Pelz, son of John and Lila Williams Pelz, was born January 22, 1915 on a farm south of Blairsburg. He attended rural schools in that area and also Blairsburg Public School. He served in the U.S. Army and Civilian Conservation Corps. On June 16, 1940 he married Velma Ruth Jaynes at Clarion. He started in construction, working for Frank Mason. He also was a self-employed trucker. In 1952, they moved to Blairsburg and the Pelz Brothers Construction was formed. He semi-retired in the late 1970s.

He is survived by his wife, Velma, daughters and sons-in-law, RoJean and Mike Spore of Cedar Rapids; Judi and Ron Claude of Woolstock; Betty Jo Mastin, Penbroke Pines, Fla., sons and daughter-in-law, Raymond Pelz, Arden Hills, Mn., Don and DeAnn Pelz, Webster City, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, brother, Darwin Pelz, Blairsburg, sister, Maxine Clemmo of Puyallup, Wa.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Welston, Ronald and Raymond Pelz.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, a volunteer firefighter at the Blairsburg Department for 40 years, a member of the Hamilton County Saddle Club and Pony Express Riders of America.
