Joan Waechter Funeral Services Will Be Wednesday In West Bend

West Bend, IA -- Funeral services for Joan Waechter of West Bend will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. The Reverend James McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in the West Bend Cemetery. The Schellhammer-Harris Funeral Home in West Bend is in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers are Gene Dahlhauser Kenneth Waechter, Steve Waechter Kevin Waechter, Patrick Mullahy and Steven Mullahy. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, November 15, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the services at the church on Wednesday. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Tuesday and a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Waechter died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, November 12, 1994, at the Kossuth County Hospital in Algona. She was 55.

Joan Mary (Mullahy) Waechter was born March 25, 1939, in Burlington, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Ryun) Mullahy. SHe attended schools in Burlington and Ottosen, then graduated from Goldfield High School in 1957. On November 16, 1957, Joan and Robert Waechter were married at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. The couple made their home in Burlington for a time before moving back to the Ottosen and West Bend area in 1959, where they were engaged in farming. Joan Waechter drove a school bus for many years for Sts. Peter and Paul School and West Bend Commmunity School. She also worked at the Grotto of the Redemption as a tour guide and in the souvenir shop, and had been employed at Schafter Grocery in West Bend. In 1991 she began her own business called "Corner House Antiques" on the main street of West Bend. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the ladies aid of the church.

Mrs. Waechter is survived by her husband, Robert, of West Bend; a son, Mark, of Earlham; a daughter Ellen Elbert of Waldorf, Maryland; and three grandchildren. Also surviving is her mother, Catherine Mullahy, of West Bend.
