Daryl was born April 3, 1927, as the only child of Elmer and Millie (Schmalle) Hafermann. He was born in Meservey and grew up on the family's rural Thornton farm. He attended country schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Meservey High School in 1945. At 17, he obtained his private pilot's license and was engaged in farming with his father. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War. Before Daryl left for the service, he had become engaged to Lois Ann Avery of Goodell. When Daryl returned he and Lois Ann were married on Nov. 28, 1953. He resumed farming on the family farm. Daryl enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid bowler; however, nothing was more important to Daryl than time with his family.
Daryl is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Lois Ann Hafermann; his daughter, Sherri Barnes and husband, Ron; his son David Hafermann, and his son Scott Hafermann and his wife, Jo; seven grandchildren, Melanie Worley and husband, Joe, Luke Dickerson and wife, Eun Jung, Jason Dickerson, Lyndsay Hafermann, Caitlin Barnes, Jeffrey Hafermann and Samantha Hafermann. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife's parents, Anson and Ethel Avery, and a grandson, Matthew Hafermann. Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, IA.
