NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Ben G. Vierkant, 84, of 26 Gaylord, Nora Springs, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, with military honors by the American Legion Post 449. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs and again after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs.

Ben was born May 17, 1916, in Goodell, Iowa, the son of George and Katie (VanOsten) Vierkant. He moved to a farm southwest of Nora Springs, Iowa, in 1932. Ben served in the Army during World War II in the 41st Infantry Division. Following the service, he moved back to rural Nora Springs where he farmed and married G. Carma Neil on Aug. 11, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Nora Springs where he worked at the Fullerton Lumberyard in Nora Springs and at Armour's where he worked for 30 years. Ben was a loving and caring Dad and always had a special gift for his children. Ben was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, the 41st Infantry Division Association and the American Legion Post 449 in Nora Springs.

Ben is survived by his wife, G. Carma Vierkant, of Nora Springs; three daughters, Diane Pigg and her husband, David, of Jacksonville, Ill., Debra Vierkant, of Eugene, Ore. and Denise Gilbert and her husband, Roger, of Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren, Dr. Jason Pigg and his wife, Aimee, of Ruston, La., Jeff Pigg and his wife, Kristi, of Bondurant, Iowa, and Melissa Gilbert, of Eugene, Ore., and one brother, Henry G. Vierkant, of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and another sister, Tillie Vaughn; and his two nephews, Roger and Gary Vaughn. Shecker Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, Iowa.
