MAY CATHARINE MOODY RUSH

29 November 1870 -- 24 October 1907

......When three years of age, her parents moved to Saybrook, which was her home with the exception of two years in Ashtabula. She received her education at Grand River Institute. She was a member of the Saybrook M. E. Church for 16 years. After her husband's death, she worked the farm "doing a man's work, always brave and willing." She went to Ashtabula with a load of apples October 20th, 1907 and, in coming out of a driveway, the wheel dropped into a deep hole, throwing her out, breaking her back and neck. She was taken to the hospital and lived until the 24th, "suffering untold agony." Everything was done to try to make her comfortable, but nothing relieved her terrible suffering but death, which came to her as a welcome relief. She made all of the arrangements for her funeral and was so glad to go. She said she should meet her loved ones and there would be no more suffering. When suffering so terribly she would repeat "My faith has made me whole. There won't be any broken backs in heaven." The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon in the Methodist Church, the service being conducted by Rev. Bailey, assisted by Rev. Winter, after which the remains were placed in Saybrook cemetery by the side of her husband. The casket and pulpit were beautifully decorated with the flowers brought by her many friends and relatives. Mrs. Rush was beloved by all who knew her and was fully prepared for the life to come. Among those who were present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, New Lyme; Mr. and Mrs. Leeworthy, Windsor; Mr. and Mrs. Peck, McKean, Pennsylvania; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mitchell, Mentor; Mrs. Helen Fitch and Byron Barr, Madison; her sister, Mrs. C. D. Overacker, with her two daughters, Belmond, Iowa; and Mrs. Gersinger and son, Cleveland.
