Pearl Martinson Jovaag, 99
Pearl Martinson Jovaag was born May 5, 1903 to the Reverend Andrew and Anna Martinson in Honan Province, China. She came to America at age 18 and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. She then received her nursing degree from Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She married the Rev. J. O. Jovaag August 26, 1928 in Belmond, Iowa. She was a true helpmate to her husband as he served congregations in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Gonvick, MN, Lakefield, MN, St. James, MN, Springfield, MN, and after retirement at St. Olaf Lutheran, Austin, MN, Central Lutheran, Minneapolis, MN and many small parishes in Texas and Louisiana. She had a true and sincere interest in each person she met and never tired of hearing their life stories while sharing her faith.
She was a concerned, dedicated loving mother to her six children, a good and faithful wife, a sterling friend and a bright and shining light wherever she went. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jonas, her son Jon, She is survived by her sons Harold (Shirley), Orlando, Fla., and Rev. Arvid (Lois) Jovaag, Austin; her daughters Corinne Bustad (M. Arthur), St. Paul, Jan Jovaag Ansorge, Austin, and Joy Ling Hill (Ted), Newport News, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
We remember her laughter, her soft velvety hands, her unending concern for her children and her extensive and lifelong correspondence. We treasure our memories. We thank those who cared so lovingly for our mother these past two years. She was at peace and felt safe in her assisted living quarters and finally in her nursing home room where she was attended by "angels of mercy."
