MASON CITY - Mary V. Radio, 84, of Mason City, died Thursday (April 18, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural prayer service at 5 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Holy Family Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Mary was born Jan. 5, 1918, to Stanley and Mayme "Virginia" (Burke) McOllough on a farm near Clarion. She attended school in Clarion, graduating in 1936. Following graduation, Mary taught at a country school. She then worked in a variety of jobs in Wisconsin and Florida, before moving to California. During the Second World War, she worked in an ammunition plant and an observation balloon hangar, doing her part for the war effort. While there, she danced to Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Harry James. She returned to Iowa and lived in Mason City, where she worked at Decker's packing plant.
Mary was united in marriage to John J. Radio on Dec. 31, 1948, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. They had four children, Thomas John, Paula Mary, Stanley John and Dennis John. She volunteered at her children's school and served as a Cub Scout den mother. She was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in the St. Elizabeth Circle and Bible Study. Mary loved to cook for her family, friends and neighbors. She supported her children in their studies, music and athletics. Mary was a trusted and loyal friend who always sought to make the world a better place.
She is survived by her brother, Dean McOllough, and his wife, Lorraine, of Clarion; her daughter, Paula Marshall and her husband, Mike, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and her sons, Thomas Radio, his wife, Peggy, and their children, Ingrid Anne, Helga Mary and Erik Thomas, all of St. Paul, Minn.; Stanley Radio, his wife, Barbara, and their children, Hannah, John and Luke, all of Omaha, Neb., and Dennis Radio and his wife, Michele, of Overland Park, Kan. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a twin sister at birth; two brothers, Melvin and his wife, Ruth, and Clair. Mary was a blessing to everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.
