Suzanne Heyne Zimmerman
February 22, 1938 - September 24, 2009

After a long battle with cancer, Suzanne Heyne Zimmerman passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 24, 2009. Suzanne was born in Washington, D.C., on February 22, 1938, the first daughter of Donald Gustav Heyne and Jeannette Hogwood Heyne, and grew up in Arlington, VA. Charlotte Heyne Coleman, her only sister, predeceased her in 1984.

Suzanne received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, married and began to raise her family. She taught elementary children in Oak Park, IL for many years; earning a Master’s Degree, and having the honor of being a Fulbright Exchange teacher in London for one academic year. Suzanne retired to Charlottesville with her adoring husband Robert M. Zimmerman, to care for her aging parents.

Robert survives her. Suzanne leaves her beloved children, David Williams Hill and Janet Hill of Denver, CO., Sarah Hill Clark and Daniel Clark of LaGrange Park, IL; and four delightful grandchildren, Elizabeth Clark, Robert Clark, Brendan Hill and Katherine Hill. She leaves her stepchildren; Kim Skogsberg (Donald) and John Zimmerman (Marianne) and 4 step granddaughters; Kristin Skogsberg, Kelsey Skogsberg, Jennifer Zimmerman, and Janine Zimmerman. Suzanne leaves her cousins; Patricia Zazo of Emmaus, PA; Andrew Hogwood of Richmond, VA., and John Hogwood of San Antonio, TX. She leaves her nephew, Edwin B. Coleman of Boston, MA, her niece Dr. Mary Clayton Coleman of Bloomington, IL, and her brother-in-law Henry R. Coleman of Williamsburg, VA.

Suzanne enjoyed many artistic pursuits during her life but probably had more fun attempting to play golf during her later years, with her husband, Robert, the ultimate life coach. Suzanne’s family wishes to express their deepest admiration and thanks to Dr. Gordon Morris for his loving care for many years. In her last few days, Hospice of the Piedmont provided much needed support and counsel to her and her family. Memorial Services will be private. If you wish to make a memorial contribution, please direct it to Martha Jefferson Cancer Care Center, C/O The Development Office, 459 Locust Ave, Charlottesville, VA 22902 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Way, Suite #300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
