BELMOND, IA - Joseph Leroy Lane was born July 26, 1926 to Floyd J. and Evelyn (Packard) Lane as the oldest of three children. He grew up in the Renwick area and graduated from Renwick High School in 1943. Joe attended Iowa State University briefly before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He was trained as a radio operator and truck driver and was stationed in France as World War II wound to a close. He was discharged from the Army in Dec. 1946. Joe was united in marriage to Beverly Kay Yarbrough on June 27, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Renwick. They farmed southwest of Renwick following their marriage, moving into Renwick in 1983 but continued to farm until 2008. Joe enjoyed his dairy cattle and assisted both his sons with registered dairy herds of both Brown Swiss and Holsteins during their farming careers. He entered the Hoard's Dairyman Cow Judging Contest almost every year, and in 2005, placed second in the nation in his age division. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family at the Minnesota cabin fishing and relaxing. He also enjoyed participating on a local bowling team during the winter months as a younger man and he was an active member of the Viona Lodge #538 in Renwick for over 50 years.

In May of 2010, Joe and Bev moved into Belle Haven Assisted Living in Belmond. Joe's health deteriorated recently after Bev's death and he passed away in the Belmond Medical Center, Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 at the age of 84.

Joe is survived by his three children, Steve Lane and his wife Rebecca, of Alexander; Jeff Lane and his wife Nicolette, of Indianola; and Linda Ryan, and her husband Michael, of Manchester; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother Robert Lane and his wife Mary Ann, of Renwick; a sister Phyllis Sande and her husband Neal, of Redmond, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly and his parents, Floyd and Evelyn Lane.

Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Renwick. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Renwick with Reverend Christina Perkins officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m.
