Twyla Burdene Baker, 88, of Lone Tree, Iowa died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services for Burdene will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 2, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Casket bearers will be John Forbes, Neil Forbes, Russ Forbes, Trey Forbes, Logan Forbes and Keith Dodson. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Visitation for Burdene will be held on Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Memorials may be directed to the Lone Tree First Responders in memory of Burdene.

Twyla Burdene Cunningham was born Aug. 12, 1921 in Graettinger, the daughter of Rev. John A. E. and Agnes Cunningham. Burdene attended schools in Bridgewater, Yorktown, Strahan, Cumberland, Seymour and Keswick, Iowa. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1941. She attended Simpson College, then earned her teaching certificate from Iowa Wesleyan College. Burdene taught kindergarten in Goldfield and Nichols.

On June 28, 1953, Burdene was united in marriage to Robert Nathan Baker. She was a homemaker and helped on the family farm and enjoyed gardening, flowers, dogs, and her son, Ralph's rabbits. Burdene will be deeply missed by her husband, Robert of Lone Tree; one son, Ralph L. Baker of Lone Tree and two sisters, Thora Collins of Des Moines and Giovanna Ries and her husband, Roger of West Des Moines. Burdene was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gerald and John Cunningham, one sister, Zella Ridenour and her husband, Orville.
