Wilbert A. Meier, 89, of Fort Dodge, died Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center. Cremation rites will take place at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Wilbert is survived by his wife Christel; his children, Marian Sue Meier, Sacramento, CA; Harlan Meier and Maurice Meier, both of Fort Dodge; William Meier, Austin, TX; Anita Holt, Edina, MN; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandchild and two siblings, Edna Rassler and Ernie Meier.

Wilbert Alfred Meier, the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Anlauf) Meier, was born August 21, 1921, in Kiowa, OK. At a young age, his family came to Iowa where he attended school. Wilbert worked on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He served in Berlin, Germany where he was united in marriage to Christel Larisch in 1948. The couple returned to the United States and he completed his military service. Wilbert worked as a farmhand for many years in the Humboldt and Thor areas. The couple later moved to Fort Dodge where they have lived for more than 55 years. Wilbert stayed active and enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking walks through his neighborhood.
