BELMOND, IA - Dena (Wiemann) Pals, 99, of Belmond, formerly of the Meservey and Sheffield areas, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the First Reformed Church, Meservey. The Reverend Philip Arnold and Reverend Melvin Voss will be officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street Southeast, Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at church on Wednesday.
Dena Wiemann, the daughter of John and Epka (Kaduce) Wiemann, was born on March 4, 1911, on the family farm at Meservey. She received her education in a rural school and Meservey High School. Dena was united in marriage to Henry Pals, Jr., on July 13, 1929, at the First Reformed Church of Meservey. Their union was blessed with four daughters: Evanette, Wanda, Betty, and Dianne. Henry and Dena farmed and raised their family in the Meservey, Belmond, and Sheffield areas until retiring to Belmond in 1967. In addition to farming with her husband, Dena was a life long homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother, and nurturing grandmother. After moving to Belmond she worked for many years as a cook at the Belmond High School. Dena was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey and later became a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. She was a member of the R.C.W. and served as president, treasurer, secretary of education among other capacities of the R.C.W. Over a period of 20 years, she taught Sunday School, Catechism, and Bible School. Throughout her entire life journey her faith and spiritual journey were strong. Dena had numerous past times she enjoyed including reading, crafts, crocheting and morning coffee with friends. She had been a resident of the Rehabilitation Center since Jan. 25, 2009.
Dena will be remembered by all who crossed her life journey as a very devout Christian, who loved her family and her many friends. She was a very gentle, caring and peaceful lady. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Evanette (Kenneth) White, Belmond, Wanda (Leonard) Pals, Clear Lake, and Dianne Phelps, Waterloo; two sisters, Thelma Langlitz, Meservey, and Frieda Jurgens, Belmond; her grandchildren; Bobbi Jo (Guy) Priestly, Alexander, Anthony (Shelley) Foss, Belmond, Gayle (Leslie) Thompson, Belmond; Todd (Denise) Foss, Clarion, and Sally (Brad) Lindeman, Belmond; Steven (Karen) Pals, Chicago, Ill., Darwyn (Mary Ann) Pals, Denver, Iowa, and Tracy Jo Kessler, Clear Lake; RoxAnne (Lyman) Emery, Alburnett, Iowa, Kerry (Trish) Morris, Belmond, Brian (Cheryl) Morris, Minneapolis, Minn., grand-daughter-in-law, Jane Morris, Clear Lake; Kathleen (Robert) O'Connor, Needham, Mass., Carmen (Nathaniel) Maendal, Brainerd, Minn., and Jim Phelps, Oceanside, Calif.; her great-grandchildren, Ashly, Randi, Nikki, Whitney, Brandon, Micki (Chad) Disney, Shea Marie, Ryan, Kelsey, Michael, Dara, Susan (Clay) Starrett, Ryan, Courtney(Anthony) Ayala, Joshua(Amanda) Morris, Matthew, Amanda, Michael, Tammy (James) Mason, Sarah, Bethany, Elliott, Austin, Matthew, Justin, Brigid, Liam, Julian: her great-great- grandchildren, Amaya, Izaac, Kaylie, Sharise, Madison, Nevan, Rilley Jo, and Ethan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Dena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry in August of 1987, her daughter, Betty Morris, a sister, Jennie Steenhard, brothers, Henry and Leonard Wiemann, a grandson, Lindsay Morrisy, granddaughter, Jody Priestly, and her sons-in-law, Derl Morris, Robert Foss, Mark Eckerman, and Dale Phelps.
