SMSgt. Gary R. Gartz, 73, died September 26, 2010 at Silver Tree Nursing Home in Schertz, TX following a three-year fight with cancer. A Rosary was recited September 30 at Schertz Funeral Home, and funeral services were held October 1 at Chapel 1 on Randolph Air Force Base. Interment with military honors was held at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Gary was born July 10, 1937 in Belmond, the son of Fred and Henrietta Gartz. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1955 and joined the U.S. Air Force. He served his country for 33 years in Texas, Alaska, Nebraska, California, and twice in Korea. He married his wife, Benita, in August 1958. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; sister Dorothy; and brothers Leo and William. He is survived by his wife Benita; children Annette (Dennis) Bouressa and Randy (Kathryn) Gartz; grandchildren Michael (Christina) Carrington, Danielle (Justin) Wilks, Taylor (Jen) Gartz, Faryn (Billy) Carr and Nicole (Jay) Thompson; great granchildren Alex, Noah, Jackson and Jax; sisters Muriel Hankes of Waverly, Leota Talley of Stillwater, OK and Maxine McVey Whitty of Belmond; and sister-in-law Dolly Gartz of Kansas.
