BRITT, IA - Jacob DeWaard, 87, of Britt, passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at Westview Care Center in Britt. Funeral services for Jacob DeWaard will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the Woden Christian Reformed Church near Woden with Pastor Harrison Harnden officiating. Burial will be at the Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Jacob DeWaard, the son of John and Lyda (Vreeman) DeWaard, was born on Feb. 24, 1923, on the family farm southwest of Kanawha. He was baptized at Wright Christian Reformed Church and had his profession of faith at an early age at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. Jacob attended country schools and graduated from Woden High School.
Jacob was united in marriage to Lorraine Danger on Feb. 20, 1946, in Mason City. For most of their married life they farmed south of Woden until retirement. Once retired, they moved into Titonka and lived there for 20 years. He also drove the Kossuth County Transit Bus for five years in his retirement. Jacob was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church where he was a Council member, teacher and participated in all activities and committees. He was active in the Hancock County Right to Life and was a past president, Chairman of Mississippi County Cousins for 16 years, member of Hancock County Soil Conservation Commission, Kanawha Christian School board member, Gideons of Kossuth County and past president, Titonka Care Center board and the care review committee for Duncan Heights. In his free time, Jacob was an avid reader in church theology, loved to travel and enjoyed his family very much.Jacob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorraine, of Britt; children: Daniel DeWaard of Mason City, Dennis (Denise) DeWaard of Sioux Center and Duane (Julie) DeWaard of Wesley; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brother Henry (Josephine) DeWaard of Kanawha; sister Sereina Holleman of Hancock, Minn.; brother-in-law Fred Danger Jr.; sister-in-law Ruth DeWaard of Woden; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Adrian, Manus, Gerrit and also a brother in infancy; sister Elsie Miller; brothers-in-law: John Miller and Abe Holleman; sisters-in-law: Louise, Grace and Wilma DeWaard; and great granddaughter Madeleine DeWaard, Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, Britt, Iowa.
