Winifred (Winnie) J. Busch, 94, of Ames, went to be with her Lord on September 12 at Israel Family Hospice House, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be Friday, September 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 16 also at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Winifred J. Busch was born June 4, 1916 in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, to Joseph and Walnette (Wierson) Rognlien. She spent her early years in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and came to Ames as a high school sophomore, graduating from Ames High School in 1934. She attended Iowa State College and worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Ames. Winnie married Charles Schumacher in 1937 and moved to St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1940, where their two children, Stephen and Shirley, were born. After Charles’ sudden death while on a business trip, Winnie and her two children moved back to Ames in 1945. Winnie married Paul Busch on August 14, 1948. The lived in Ames all their married life and were blessed with two children, Wanda and Daniel. Winnie used her many talents caring for parents, spouses, children and grandchildren. She loved her family and was especially glad she was able to see and know her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was “Gigi” to the great-grandchildren, and they loved the “Gigi cookies” (Kringla) she baked for them. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, loved to worship her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and especially enjoyed the praise music of the Gaithers. She liked playing bridge with friends and played until very recently. She was a member of Ames Woman’s Club and greatly enjoyed travel throughout her life.
She is survived by three children, Shirley (Dennis) Tice of Ames, Wanda (Charles) Thomas of Urbandale, Daniel Busch of Nevada; one daughter-in-law, Diane Schumacher of Bullhead City, AZ; ten grandchildren, Heather (Kurt) Widmer, Christopher Tice, Lisa (Mike) Damge, Charles (Pam) Thomas II, Melyssa (Jason) Bloom, Benjamin (Kelly) Thomas, and Aaron, Joy, Johnathan, and Rachael Busch; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, and Anna Widmer; Nicholas Tice; Jacob, Joshua, and Benjamin Damge; Blake, Lauren, and Claire Thomas; Jackson, Luke and Hudson Bloom; and Miller Thomas. Also surviving are one brother-in-law, Willis Richard, two sisters-in-law, Adele Rognlien and Esther Rognlien, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Charles Schumacher and Paul Busch; her brother, Walt Rognlien; her sister, Marie Richard; and one son, Stephen Schumacher. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Israel Family Hospice House.
