HAGERSTOWN, Indiana - Francis G. Black, 91, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005, in Henry County Memorial Hospital, New Castle. He was born in Webster City, Iowa on October 27, 1914, the son of Herbert and Bessie Frederick Black. He lived most of his life in the Modoc and Hagerstown area. He married Irene Sherry on June 9, 1944, and she survives. Francis was a retired employee of Borg-Warner, Muncie and was a life long farmer. During his early years, he performed as an aerialist. While serving with the Air Force during WW II, he was stationed in Alaska as a photographer. He enjoyed woodworking and boating. He was a member of West River Friends Meeting.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: 2 children, Larry Black (Cindy) and Donna Harney (Daniel), both of Hagerstown; 4 grandchildren, Sherry Stuart (Jon), Erica Harney (Matthew Cain) and Jason Black, all of Hagerstown, Jana Sly (Patrick) of Evansville; 3 great-grandchildren, Paige Stuart, Lauren Sly and Garren Sly; 2 sisters, Mildred Pringle of Webster City, IA, Mayabelle Floyd of Des Moines, IA; 2 brothers, Richard Black of Las Vegas, NV, Harvey Black of Clarion, IA; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by 3 sisters, Marian Newcomb, Marge Eide, Marcella Bige.
Memorial services will be at 7 P.M. Monday, December 19, 2005 in West River Friends Meeting. Pastor Jeff Crim will officiate. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends at the church after 6 P.M. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of West River Friends Meeting. Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is in charge of arrangements.
