Goldfield, IA -- Duane K. “Bill” Olson, the son of Clifford and Maree (Risvold) Olson, was born February 21, 1924, in Goldfield, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Goldfield High School in 1942. Bill also attended Tobin Business College in Fort Dodge. On June 1, 1947, Bill was united in marriage with Doris Kurfman at the Baptist Church in Renwick. Bill farmed from 1945–1960 and then worked as a parts man for different local businesses. He also worked for Umthun Trucking Company and continued helping area farmers during the harvest season after retiring. Bill loved to mow his yard and work outside, visit with family and friends, read and travel. Bill was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield and Bower Lodge 464 in Eagle Grove, where he was a 50 year member.
Bill passed away at Wright Medical Center in Clarion on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the age of 86 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Verle Lenz. Survivors include his wife, Doris Olson of Goldfield; his five children, Carol Helmke of Eagle Grove, Sheila Merrell and husband Bert of St. Louis, MO, David Olson and wife Larayne of Sioux City, Steven Olson and wife Jaunita of Kapaau, HW and Annette Rust and husband Jeff of Littleton, CO; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; sister, Patricia Lenz of Jewel and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 1:30 P.M. at United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield with Pastor Joyce Garton-Natte officiating. Visitation is Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield with a Masonic Service at 7:15 P.M. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
