April 9, 1912 -- February 8, 2005
Vincent Arnold Oxley was born April 9, 1912, in Corwith, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Alta Wilhite Oxley. The family moved to Windom, Minnesota, when Vince was a few months old, they then moved to Owatonna, Minnesota, in 1918, and then to Algona, Iowa, in 1928, to farm. Vince graduated from Bryant School in Algona in 1930. After his schooling Vince farmed before moving into Algona in 1950. He worked a few odd jobs before settling on mowing lawns in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter. Vince would often be seen pedaling his Schwinn Bicycle through the streets of Algona pulling his lawnmower. He later became known as the “lawn man” to many in town as he had as many as 36 regular customers. Vince used as many as seven rotary mowers until 1968, when he thought it was time to convert to power mowers. He finally started to cut his work load back in 1979, after the tornado, as he needed the time to supervise the construction of his new house as his old house was damaged beyond repair in the tornado. Vince moved to the Kossuth County Care Facility in September of 1991. Vince was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Algona, where he took care of mowing the yard and trimming the bushes. Vince died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the Algona Manor Care Center, at the age of 92. He is survived by several cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Evelyn McEnroe and an infant sister, Esther Oxley.
