Donald A. Poage, 86, of Baxter, died on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the Baxter Health Care Center. Services will be held on Friday, June 25th at 11:00 AM at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Baxter, IA. Family will be present at 10:00 AM. The Cremation Society of Eastern Central Western Iowa is assisting the family. Donald Arthur Poage was born June 6, 1924 at Baxter, Iowa to parents, Robert and Marion Chapin Poage. He attended country school, went to high school in Newton, IA, and attended Iowa State University in Ames. Donald was married to Sylvia Naomi Arnold on April 8, 1947 at New Hampton, Iowa. They resided in Corwith, Iowa where he was engaged in farming and they raised their family. He served in various positions at Corwith United Methodist Church where he was a member. Don also was a soil and water commissioner for several terms. Hobbies he enjoyed were reading, fishing, woodworking, needlecrafts, and repairing things. Don was an outgoing, jovial person who loved to visit with people, especially the Corwith coffee group. He was a kind, caring, and generous person who will be missed greatly. Family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Sylvia; children, Robert (Sheryl) of Lombard, IL; Peggy (Joseph) Dvorak of Colfax; Debra (Thomas) Norton of Frankfort, IL; David Poage of Corwith; and Timothy (Lori Peterson) Poage of Corwith; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren, his sister Ruth Claxon of Minnesota, and brother Wayne (Irma) Poage of Baxter. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Marion; and step mother, Jean Gleaves Poage. Memorial contributions may be made to the Corwith Public Library or the Colfax Historical Society.
