DES MOINES, IA - Marshall Christian Nelson, 97, died Tuesday (Aug. 11, 2009) at Calvin Community. Marshall was born in Emerson, N.D., on July 12, 1912, to Martin Nelson and Gertrude Dinehart. He was united in marriage to Ethel Gehler Sasse on Dec. 11, 1981, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua. After 21 years, he retired from John Deere. He was a 32nd Degree Mason since 1966 and belonged to the Daylight Lodge No. 660. Marshall served in the Army until his honorable discharge in 1938.
Marshall is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ethel Nelson of Des Moines; son, Jack Nelson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; stepson, August Sasse of Mason City; stepdaughter, Starr Kirchner of Ankeny; siblings, Mable Helgeson, Harold Nelson, Mary Young, Doran Nelson, Roy Severson, Betty Clarke, Minnie Hein; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, May Louise Hargrave Nelson; son, John Nelson; daughter, Louise Buckels; siblings, Chauncy, Myrtle, Howard, and Norman.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 N.W. 60th Ave., Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvin Community Good Samaritan Fund, 4210 Hickman Road, Des Moines, IA 50310, in loving memory of Marshall.
