Cecilia Francis Lee - owned and worked in a gold mine

Cecilia Francis Lee died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003. She was 91. Born in Corwith, Iowa, as one of 20 children, Mrs. Lee came to Hayward in 1945. Family members said she owned and operated a restaurant in Corwith with her husband until they moved to California in 1943 to work in the shipyards during the war. Before settling down in Hayward, she and her husband owned and worked in a gold mine in the Murphy area for a year. Family members also said she worked for Sunshine Biscuit briefly before transferring to Mother's Cookies, where she was employed for 30 years until her retirement in 1975. Mrs. Lee became an active member in the St. Bedes parish in Hayward. Also a member of Catholic Daughters of America, she participated in the organization's bake sales, salad bar luncheons and other money-raising activities.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Edwin R. Lee of Hayward; sister, Margaret Anderson of Clarion, Iowa; brothers, John Kelch of Bloomington, Ill., and Charles Kelch of Marshalltown, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today with a vigil service at 5 p.m. at Machado's Hillside Chapel, 1051 Harder Road, Hayward. Meet at the mortuary at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to go to an 11 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Bede's Catholic Church, 26950 Patrick Ave., Hayward. Burial will be at Holy Secpulchre Cemetery, 26320 Mission Blvd., Hayward.
