April 27, 1868 -- June 30, 1946

Dr. Gilbert N. Thompson, the Son of Gilbert Thompson and Matilda Ewing Thompson, was born at Oxford Mills, Ontario, Canada on April 27, 1868. Dr. Gilbert N Thompson attended Keokuk Medical College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, graduating in 1900, He was president of senior class and was issued a certificate of membership in Iowa University alumni. Prior to coming to Jesup in 1917. where he purchased the practice of Dr. Frank E Shimer. From 1901-1903 he practiced medicine at Kanawha IA. 1903-1910 he followed his profession at Lamont and in 1914 went to the Pacific Coast for a time. Dr. Thompson served Jesup as mayor 12 years, first being elected in 1924, serving two terms, and again in 1934 holding office until 1942. In march of this year 1946 he was once more elected to serve as mayor. He held membership in the Buchanan county, Iowa State, and American Medical Associations, local Lions club, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, A.F. & A. M. and Knife and Fork club of Waterloo, and attended the local Presbyterian church. He served many years as committeeman from Perry township for the Democratic party. He never married. Funeral services held at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon were attended by a large number of friends, paying tribute to a citizen held in high esteem by our people having contributed much to the life of the community through his many years of faithful service in the medical profession and by his civic interests and activities. Dr. Thompson is survived by one brother A. C. Thompson of Rockford Ill. two sisters, Mrs. Jane Cranston of Rockford Ill. and Mrs. Agnes Edson of San Diego, Cal. a number of nieces and nephews and host of friends. Preceding him were his parents. Dr. Thompson will be greatly missed by the many friends whom he acquired during his almost thirty years of residence. Interment was in Cedar Crest Cemetery, Jesup Iowa.
