Services were held for Ben Westphal, who died June 3 at his Scotts Valley home. He was 59. A native of Vallejo, Mr. Westphal later moved to Iowa, where he raised a family and graduated from nursing school. He was an Army veteran and served in Vietnam. Mr. Westphal moved to Santa Cruz in 2002 and worked as a registered nurse at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center. He loved his job and co-workers, his family said, and also enjoyed the San Francisco 49ers, golf, the Beatles and World War II history. Survivors: Daughters Sara Hellvig of Badger, Iowa, Ann Westphal of New York and Dana Westphal of Humboldt, Iowa; and two grandsons. Services: 3:30 p.m. today at Suttery Maternity and Surgery Center, 2900 Chanticleer Ave., Santa Cruz.

Ben Westphal, 59, of Scotts Valley, CA, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at his Scotts Valley home. Memorial services will be 7:00 PM Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.

He is survived by his 3 children, Sara Hellvig of Badger, Iowa, Ann Westphal, of New York, NY, and Dana Westphal (Emily) of Humboldt, IA, as well as two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Westphal who passed away in 2008 and his son-in-law, Andrew Hellvig, 2006. Ben loved having his family come out to California to visit him. A native of Vallejo, CA, he was a Vietnam veteran having served in the United States Army. He lived in Iowa for many years where he raised his family and graduated from nursing school. A Santa Cruz area resident since 2002, he was a registered nurse at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center, where he loved his job and his co-workers. Ben loved his San Francisco 49ers and Giants. He had a passion for music, his favorite being the Beatles. He was an avid reader and history buff, especially World War II. He loved movies; his favorite was "The Godfather". Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
