September 20, 1916 -- January 31, 1998

BELMOND, IA — Carroll Arthur Bamford, 81, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ Congregational with the Rev. Cindy Mueller officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Belmond Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the Carroll Bamford Memorial Fund.

Carroll Arthur Bamford was born on Sept. 20, 1916, in Belmond, to Percy and Matilda (Hanson) Bamford. He attended the Hickory Grove School northwest of Belmond through the eighth grade and then went on to graduate from Belmond High School in 1933. Carroll farmed with his father north of Belmond until May 6, 1941, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. While serving his country during World War II, Carroll was stationed overseas in England, Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Scotland and Germany with the "Engineers." He received his honorable discharge in Chicago in August, 1945.

On Sept. 5, 1947, Carroll was united in marriage to Mary Jeanne Bailey in Mason City. They have two daughters, Sharon and Cindy. Upon returning from the service, Carroll entered the carpentry field until 1948, when he became a clerk-carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was later promoted to clerk. When he retired on July 1, 1974, Carroll was the assistant to the postmaster in Belmond. Since his retirement Carroll had kept busy on their acreage, working in his shop on special carpentry projects. He loved being outside, gardening and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He was a great woodworker and made many things for his children and grandchildren. In May of 1994, Carroll and Jeanne moved to downtown Belmond. Carroll remained active after losing his wife in November of 1994, even though he was in failing health.

His survivors include two daughters, Sharon Rod and her husband, Richard, of Wheaton, Ill., and Cindy Wegman and her husband, Gale, of Belmond; four grandchildren, Megan Wegman of Belmond and Joshua, Molly and Dana Rod, all of Wheaton; and one brother, Loren Bamford and his wife, Lirlene, of Belmond. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanne; three sisters, Grace, Leota and Lola; a grandson, Daniel Rod; and a granddaughter, Courtney Rod.
