Edith Beatrice (Luick) Hill, the daughter of Willis and Nellie (Bullis) Luick, was born Dec. 31, 1897, at Belmond. She attended the Belmond schools, graduated from high school in 1915 and went onto teach rural school a year before she married Art W. Hill on Dec. 31, 1916. Together through the years they owned and operated the Ford Auto Agency, the Hill Auto Awning Manufacturing Company and the Hill Furniture Store. On June 1, 1948, they opened the Hill Motel. Art Hill, a victim of leukemia, died on Oct. 28, 1951. Mrs. Hill continued to run the motel on her own until 1993, when she retired at the age of 95. She then resided at 311 Fourth St. N.E., Belmond, for five years, until becoming a resident of the Belmond Care Center in February of this year. She was a member of the Kensington Card Club, enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, cooking and making quilts, but often mentioned that her real "hobby" was people, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Hill was very involved with the community through the Chamber of Commerce and the Belmond Fire Department.
She is survived by one son, Duran Hill and friend, Lena Peyton, of Belmond; one stepson, Raymond Hill of Coon Rapids, Minn.; six grandchildren, Steve and Dee Brede of Hollis, N.H., Katy and Ed Petrini of Hollis, N.H., Tony and Linda Brede of Shell Rock, Debbie Pollack of Foster City, Calif., Jorga Wood and Jim Erickson of Clarion and Bruce and Tina Hill of Manly; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art; daughters, Norma Jean and Muriel; stepson, Clair Hill; and sisters, Ethel Tuttle and Emma Watts.
