C. P. Luick, Belmond's benefactor, dies at 86

Belmond - Chester P. Luick, 86, a pioneer resident of the Belmond community, died at the Belmond Community Hospital Tuesday following a stroke suffered five days before. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church. The Rev. William Hill will officiate. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery with Johnston Funeral Home in charge. Surviving are his wife, Grace; four stepchildren, Mrs. Evan Parry, Cedar Rapids; Mrs, George Price, Brownsville, Tex.; Mrs. Donald McNulty, Belmond, and William H. Luick, Webster City. Mr. Luick's philanthropies to the town of Belmond have earned him public affection and respect such as few men gain in their lifetime. Over a period of years he has given a total of more than a half-million dollars to the people of Belmond. In 1952 he set up a trust fund of more than $100,000, known as the Chester P. and Vida Luick Memorial Hospital Trust, with proceeds earmarked for hospital improvements. In 1956 another trust fund was set up for providing the town of Belmond with a swimming pool. By the time the pool and its grounds were completed there had been between $85,000 and $100,000 spent on the project. His gifts have also included $10,000 toward the building of the hospital and $25,000 for the Congregational Church Youth Center. Mr. Luick's last benefaction to the town of Belmond was a third trust fund called the Fred and Alice Luick Memorial Building given in 1959 in memory of his parents, who were among Belmond's earliest settlers. Funds for this trust are provided from a 354-acre farm with an estimated value of $150,000; two city lots in Belmond and other securities to bring the total up to around $300,000. The community building is to be incorporated in a new high school building in Belmond.
