Thornton, IA - Pastor Marlin E. Ingebretson, 83, of Thornton, died Wednesday (July 14, 2010) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home. Interment will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 19, at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. A celebration of life and praise service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran in Thornton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 18, at Retz Funeral Home in Thornton. Memorials may be given to your choice of world hunger charities, Rockwell Community Nursing Home or the Alzheimer's Association.

He was born July 15, 1926, to Sylvan and Bertha (Flugum) Ingebretson in Lake Mills. He was baptized at Winnebago Lutheran Church and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City in 1941. After graduation from Forest City High School in 1944, he entered the Navy where he served until 1946. His military experiences, particularly his connections to Navy chaplains, encouraged him to plan his pre-theological studies. Marlin attended Waldorf College from 1946 until 1948 and received his bachelor of arts degree from Luther College in 1950. He received his divinity degree from Luther Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1954. He received his master of theology degree from Luther Theological Seminary in 1963. Marlin was united in marriage to Marilyn Joanne Carlson of St. Paul, Minn., on June 19, 1953, in St. Paul.
Marlin served as pastor of St. Paul and Upper Fall River Lutheran in Eureka, Kan. In Iowa, he served at Bethesda Lutheran in Jewell, Trinity Lutheran and Ullensvang Lutheran in Thor, Peace Lutheran in Ryan and St. Paul Lutheran in Thornton. He also served on the faculty of Waldorf College in Forest City. He retired in 1996. Marlin was giving, kind to all, a peacemaker and a faithful servant to the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Stanley; brother, Arden, sister, Arlene; infant son, Kent; and sister-in-law, Elaine Boyd. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Thornton; children, Mark (Christine) of Rochester, Minn., Karen (David) Burrier of Pleasant Hill, Janna Willardson of Addison, Texas, Susan (Jim) Cramer of Anaheim, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother, Dean (Diann) of Alexandria, Minn.; brother-in-law, George Boyd of White Bear Township, Minn.; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
