ALEXANDER - Shirley L. Hackley, 87, of Alexander, passed away Saturday (Dec. 4, 1999) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church in Alexander with the Rev. Rob Ford officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Shirley Hackley was born Oct. 7, 1912, in Rudd, the daughter of Thomas and Carrie (Bishop) Robeson. She grew up in the Rudd and Charles City areas, where she attended country school. She was united in marriage to Leland Johnson in 1930. To this union were born two sons, Dale and Roger. She worked at the Corner Cafe in Rowan for a number of years. She later was united in marriage to Glenn Hackley. The couple made their home in the Rowan area, where Glenn worked for the county and she continued to work at the Corner Cafe. He passed away on May 26, 1965. She then moved to Howard County in 1966, where she spent many years with her loving and faithful companion, John Leist. She entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1995. She enjoyed gardening and canning; she always had a jar of her famous pickles ready when the grandchildren came to visit. She also enjoyed playing cards and fishing. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors Club and attended the Methodist Church in Saratoga before moving back to the Alexander area.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Kim Johnson and special friend, Rick, of West Union; four grandsons, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Denise, of Alpha, Robert Johnson and special friend, Kathy, of Postville, Mike Johnson and his wife, Kathy, of Castalia, and Rick Johnson and his wife, Kim, of Latimer; 16 great-grandchildren, Katie, Amanda, Katie, Jessica, Carrie, Crystal, Brooke, Karissa, Emily, Ashley, Jennifer, Nate, Travis, Jeremiah, Christopher and Cory; two great-great-grandchildren, Trevor and Hunter; two daughters-in-law, Vivian Pals and her husband, Delbert, of Meservey and Donna Halverson and her husband, Wayne, West Union; sister-in-law, Bea Robeson of Minneapolis, Minn.; special niece, Pat Meyer and her husband, Harold, of Mason City; many other nieces and nephews; and her special extended family, the John Leist family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; two sons, Dale and Roger; one grandson, Alan Johnson; one sister; four brothers; and very special friend, John Leist.
