FORT MYERS, Fla. -- James G. Carlson was born on a farm near Klemme, Iowa, on July 22, 1909, the sixth of nine children born to Gustaf H. Carlson and Jane Ann Cherry Carlson. He married Clarice Louise Wellemeyer on May 31, 1936, and farmed near Ingram, Wis., and also near Klemme, Iowa. Jim retired from farming in 1972, moved to Belmond, and since 1980 had resided in North Fort Myers, Fla. Jim was a loving husband, a devoted father and a hard-working neighbor who loved to share stories with his friends. In his later years, he enjoyed cooking and baking. Many of his friends and relatives were recipients of his generous nature in the form of cookies and home-made bread. He died on June 27, 1995, in Fort Myers, Fla., after many years of gradually declining physical abilities brought on by lung disease. He reached the age of 85 years, 11 months and five days. He and Clarice had recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Clarice Carlson, of North Fort Myers, Fla.; two children, Arthur Carlson and his wife, Elaine, of Nevada City, Calif., and Candace Murray and her husband, Michael, of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Mabel Quandt and her husband, Frederick, of West Allis, Wis.; a brother, Robert S. Carlson and his wife, Glenna, of Apple Valley, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Inga Hooper and her husband, Kevin, of Concord, N.H., Kyla Carlson of Sunnyvale, Calif., James Murray of Alexandria, Va., and Joan Murray of Gainesville, Fla. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association. The National Cremation Society was in charge of arrangements.
