SHEFFIELD, IA - Elwyn Elmer Brouwer left his temporary home of 83 years on Feb. 13, 2010, after a long battle with Parkinson's. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with Pastor Janet Rieckhoff-Faris presiding. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the church.

Elwyn was born on Sept. 13, 1926, in a rural home in Klemme to Arthur and Sylvia (Moberly) Brouwer. He was the second of seven children in the family. During his childhood years, the family had several moves before ending up on a farm west of Sheffield. After graduating from Sheffield High School he did construction work for Berding Construction. He then married his sweetheart E. Joyce Froning on April 11, 1948, at Salem Methodist Church in Chapin. To this union they had two daughters, Sandra J. Brouwer and Susan M. Brouwer Rother. They became inseparable as they encountered all their adventures together. They ran the Sheffield Locker together for three years before moving to the country to start their farming career. They farmed west of Chapin raising all the typical crops and livestock but were so very proud of his black angus herd. In 1991 they retired from farming to enjoy a more relaxed life. They enjoyed family get-togethers and helping his family and friends whenever they needed it. They looked forward to camping with family and friends and spending time in Texas with the other snowbirds. He liked to go fishing with his grandsons and friends and golfing with Joyce. When on the farm, you could find him either tinkering around in his wood shop or in his garden. He was always ready to play a game of cards or entertain people with his harmonica and telling jokes. He was an active and committed member of the Salem Methodist Church in Chapin.

Elwyn will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, E. Joyce Brouwer; daughters, Sandra Brouwer and Susan and Mark Rother; grandsons, Ryan and Becky Rother, Tony and Jessica Rother, Chad and Danica Brouwer; great-grandchildren, Rose and Brooke Rother, Landon Rother, Jaden Brouwer. His brothers and sisters, Norma (Karl) Zimmerman, Ardella (Dean) Oldag, Duane (Dorothy) Brouwer, Darlene (Merlin) Peter, and Gordon (Jean) Brouwer and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an older brother, Ivan; and his parents, Arthur and Sylvia Brouwer. Retz Funeral Home.
