NEWTON, Ill. — Laura (Mrs. Ed) Shafer, 39, died of cancer at her home at 811 W. Jourdan, Newton, Ill., on Monday, Oct. 20, 1997. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, Ill., with Pastor Jamie Havens of the First Assembly of God Church delivering the message. Burial was at the Jewett Cemetery, Jewett, Ill. Casket bearers were Douglas Hanson, M/Sgt. Kenneth Hanson, Jeremy Hanson, Robert Thiemann, Floyd DeLawyer and Richard Hanson.

Laura was born Oct. 2, 1958, at Klemme, Iowa, to Larry A. and Eva M. (Thiemann) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanual Reformed United Church of Christ, at Klemme, and moved with her family to the Belmond-Goodell area in 1964. She graduated from the Belmond High School, Belmond, Iowa, in 1977 and from Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa, in 1978. She worked for the Berkland & Houser Law Firm in Belmond, Iowa, until her marriage to Harry "Ed" Shafer on Dec. 21, 1980, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, in Klemme, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to Montrose, Ill.; where she worked for Fedders at Effingham, Ill. Ed and Laura and their family moved to Newton, Ill., in 1989. She started working for E.R. Moore and continued working there until the time of her death. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her many friends, camping and being a Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by her husband, Harry "Ed" Shafer of Newton, Ill; son, John Shafer, at home; daughter, Jennifer Shafer, at home; stepdaughter, Kimberly Whitnell and her husband, Rick, of Florissant, Mo.; her parents, Larry A. Hanson of Jackson, Ohio, and Eva Hanson of Alexander, Iowa; her mother and father-in-law, Georgi and Roy Trader of Mattoon, Ill.; brothers, Douglas Hanson and his wife, Marla, of Goodell, Iowa; M/Sgt. Kenneth Hanson of Osan, Korea, and his wife, Kelly, of Meservey, Iowa; Roger Hanson and his wife, Kay, of Klemme, Iowa; sisters, Barbara Hanson of Ames, Iowa, and Donna Hanson of Clive, Iowa; paternal grandparents, Lyle and Ila Hanson of Greeley, Colo.; and Madeline and Wayne Hymas of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alvin and Jennie Thiemann; and her father-in-law, John Shafer.
