MASON CITY — Helen H. Danger, 94, of Mason City died Sunday (Oct. 12, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services for Helen will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Stewart officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be given in Helen’s name to Hospice of North Iowa.

Helen H. Hartkopp was born Oct. 1, 1909, the daughter of Fred and Freida (VanDrier) Hartkopp in Hubbard, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and spent most of her younger life in Hubbard, Iowa. Helen attended school in Hubbard and Mason City. On Feb. 11, 1926, Helen H. Hartkopp was united in marriage to Fred Danger in Alden, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. For most of their married life they were farmers southeast of Mason City and Klemme. In 1966 they retired from farming and moved to Mason City. Helen’s husband, Fred Sr., passed away in 1973. Shortly after her husband’s death, Helen became a nurses aide at the Good Shepherd Care Center. Helen retired a second time from Good Shepherd Care Center at the age of 84 and after 20 years of faithful service. Helen was an active and faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church. She loved to crochet Afghans for all of her children and grandchildren. Helen loved and cared dearly for all of her family, but it was her grandchildren who brought warmth to her heart and kept her spirit young. Helen had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed bringing a smile to everyone’s face. She enjoyed visiting with her farming friends. Helen’s spirit, sense of humor and ambition will be sadly missed by her family and friends. To her family she always demonstrated that she loved the Lord which comforts all those who knew her. Helen always loved to read her Bible and when she could no longer see she listened to it on tape.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughter, Lorraine DeWaard and husband, Jacob, of Titonka, and daughter, Josephine DeWaard and husband, Henry, of Kanawha; son, Fred Danger Jr. of Mason City; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor Jackson of Mason City, and Grace Schultz of Mason City; sister-in-law, Harriet Hartkopp of Florida; and many special nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fred Danger Sr.; sisters Selma Hartkopp and Jennie Danger; brothers, Emil and Martin Hartkopp; grandson James DeWaard and granddaughter-in-law, Jerry DeWaard. Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory.
