Dorothy Emilie Everds of Tempe, Arizona, died on April 19, 2004. Memorial services were held on April 28 in Tempe. She was born October 3, 1910, in Klemme, Iowa, to Fred and Mathilda Griewe. Her father was a Methodist minister, so she lived in a number of places in Iowa and Illinois. Mrs. Everds was graduated from high school at Center Point, Iowa in 1927. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1932 from Cornell College at Mount Vernon, Iowa. In 1943 she received her Master of Music degree from Northwestern University at Evanston, Illinois. She taught music in Union, Primghar, Denison and Clinton, all in Iowa, making a name for herself in the Iowa state music contests, both in instrumental and vocal music. In 1938 she went to Sheridan, Wyoming as director of high school music and elementary supervisor. In 1944 she went to Walla Walla, Washington as director of vocal music in the high school. During this time she wrote a number of articles that were published in National Music Education magazines. Her musical groups always rated high in the state music contests and were very much in demand for community entertainment, making over 100 appearances a year. In 1950 she married Dave Everds and moved to Longview, Washington where she taught vocal music at Monticello Junior High School. She was always complimented on the accomplishments of her students.
Her philosophy was for the students to work at the peak of their ability, and it was very satisfying for her to have them perform well. She retired in 1965. Mrs. Everds was a member of the Longview Community Church, Louise Arnett Circle, Longview Woman's Club, Washington Retired Teachers, Longview Education Association, Maple Leaf Orthopedic Guild, Belle Lettre Study Club, O.E.S., and former member of B.P.W., A.A.U.W., Altrusa and Delta Kappa Gamma (a teacher's honor sorority.) Other than her music profession, Mrs. Everds loved her home, liked to entertain, to sew, do all kinds of crafts and needlework, and to play bridge. From 1972 until 1990 the Everds spent their winters at their resort home in Venture Out, Mesa, Arizona.
Her husband, Dave, preceded her in death in 1990 after which she moved to Friendship Village, a retirement home in Tempe, Arizona, where she lived until her death. A nephew, Larry Griewe of Sac City, Iowa, a great niece, Ann Hilleman, and a great nephew, Dr. Greg Griewe, survive Mrs. Everds. Besides her husband, a brother, Cyrus Griewe and a sister, Opal Griewe, preceded her in death. Memorials may be given to Longview Community Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
