A funeral Mass for Raymond L. Wilkie, 79, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Elgin. The Rev. Andrew Plesa will officiate. Born March 20, 1924, in Fredericksburg, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Alice (nee Pierce) Wilkie, he passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Sherman West Court, Elgin. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Elgin. Mr. Wilkie was a graduate of Alpha Iowa High School in 1952. He was a veteran and served in the Army from Jan. 17, 1949, until Sept. 4, 1951, and received the Purple Heart for a wound on April 25, 1951. He moved to Illinois and farmed in the Barrington area until 1971. Ray then moved to Elgin and had worked at the Kane County Highway Department until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church of Elgin. Survivors include his sisters, Charlotte Woolery, Grace (Stanley) Hastings and Dorothy (Alvin) Denny, all of Klemme, Iowa ; sister-in-law, Elva Wilkie of Enterprise, Ore.; aunt, Ruby Pierce of Fredericksburg; brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Betty) Miller, Leonard (Cornelia) Miller, Wallace (Elizabeth) Miller and Richard (Virginia) Miller, all of Elgin, Harold (Mary) Miller of Reedsburg, Wis., and Robert (Mary Lou) Miller of Genoa; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Wilkie on Oct. 24, 2003; sisters, Mildred Woolery and Muriel Paulsen; and a brother, Verne Wilkie. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass today, at the church. Arrangements were made by Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Memorials may be made to the church.
