The Garner Leader & Signal -- IowaDaniel R. Barz, 49, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, formerly of Garner, died on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his home in Minneapolis. Family and extended family funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 23, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Music was provided by organist, Margaret Jass and vocalist, Beverly Cataldo. Casket bearers were Kenny Engstler, Robert Hagen, Matt Hagen, Scott Campbell, Al Tompkins and Larry Tompkins. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.
Daniel Ray Barz, the son of Allen Kenneth and Ihlajean (Johnson) Barz was born on July 29, 1955 at Belmond. He was baptized at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme and confirmed at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner. He graduated from the Garner-Hayfield High School in 1973 and Iowa State University at Ames in 1978 with a degree in Environmental Studies. After graduation, he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he was involved in environmental sales. In July of 2004 he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. In high school Dan enjoyed playing in band, swing choir and sports. He also enjoyed the sports and activities offered by the mountainous environment of Colorado. Dan was a member of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner and was a former choir member.
He is survived by his mother, Ihlajean Barz of Garner; two brothers, Mark Barz and his wife, Dalena of Ventura and Mike Barz of Minneapolis; four nieces and nephews, Nathan Barz of Ventura, Erika (Bob) Kirby of Omaha, Nebraska, Nora Muessingmann of Omaha and Melissa Dakin of Fort Collins, Colorado; his grandmother, Gay Horgen of Albert Lea, Minnesota; several aunts and uncles and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Barz on February 2, 2005.
