Hugh Jefferson Porterfield, 96, Alexander died April 22, 2002 in Payson, AZ. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 29, at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond with Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Friends may call at the church, one hour prior to services on Saturday. Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery in Alexander.

Hugh Porterfield was born November 1, 1905, on a farm near Holton, KS, the son of Robert and Edith (Gatewood) Porterfield. He attended rural school and graduated from Holton High school in 1925. He later attended citizens military training for two summer sessions. Being the eldest son, he had been the family farm hand for a number of years. The family moved from Holton, KS, to southwest Iowa in 1934, and then to Alexander in 1938. On December 29, 1946, he married Myrtle Reppe at Lily, SD. The couple farmed for 55 years northwest of Alexander. They were members of St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond. They had spent the winters in Arizona for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Gray, Marion, Dick, Gordon; and a grandson, Joshua. Survivors are his wife, Myrtle Porterfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Ruth and Charles Israel of Des Moines; a son, James Warren Porterfield of Park Ridge, IL; seven grandchildren, Joel and Krista Porterfield of Park Ridge, IL, Elizabeth, Kathryn, Bethany, Rebecca, and Rachel Israel of Des Moines; a sister, Leota (Mrs. Leland) Biggart of Circleville, KS; a brother, Jay G. Porterfield of Talaquah, CA.
