ROCKFORD, IA — Mabel H. Trettin, 91, of 1367 Winnebago Road, Rockford, Iowa, died Thursday (Dec. 7, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford, Iowa. Officiating will be the Rev. Patricia Shaw. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 301 W. Main, Rockford. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Mabel Trettin Memorial Fund for the restoration of the “Jesus Blessing the Children” picture at the church.

Mabel was born on Jan. 17, 1915, at Grafton, Iowa, one of nine children to Albert F. and Kathrina E. (Claus) Trettin. She was baptized at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. She was a graduate of the Rockford High School in 1934 and then the Iowa Beauty College in Des Moines. She then opened a salon with her sister, Ella, in Kanawha. During the war years she lived in California, worked and graduated from Capitol City Commercial College. She returned to Iowa when her father died in 1943. About a year later she became engaged as a hairdresser and cosmetologist, owning her own successful business called Elm Crest Hair Fashions for 30 years, until retiring in 1985. Her business was located in Chicago and Evanston, Ill. Following her retirement she moved, in November 1994, to Mason City to be closer to her family. Mabel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, a past president of the Chicago Cosmetologist Association, an officer of the Iowa State Cosmetologist Association and Women’s Club of Mason City.

Mabel traveled extensively all over the world visiting many countries that included the Holy Land, Africa and China. She also collected many treasures and memorabilia from the countries she visited. She also enjoyed bowling and nurturing her African violets. She made every effort to be home in Rockford for major holidays and dearly loved and cherished all of her nieces and nephews and made each of them feel special.

Mabel is survived by two sisters, Ella Schutt, Mason City, and Shirley Fullerton, Rockford; three brothers, Edwin and his wife, Margaret, Trettin, Harold and his wife, Frances, Trettin, and George and his wife, Arlene, Trettin, all of Rockford; and many, many, nieces and nephews. Her parents; two brothers, Walter Trettin, who died in the service, and Wesley Trettin; one sister, Marie Weigand; her cousin, who lived with them and she thought of as a brother, Orland Graper, preceded her in death.
