Leroy Scharnhorst, 72, of Lake Havasu City died Monday at his home with family members at his side. He was born Oct. 7, 1936, in Waverly, Iowa, to Herbert and Ida Scharnhorst. He was baptized and confirmed at Western Douglas Lutheran Church in Bremer County, Iowa. He married Lois (Zimmermann) on June 26, 1960, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. He began his education in country school, graduated from Waverly High School in 1954, received his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Wartburg College, Waverly in 1961 and his Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1970. Following his education he served the next 42 years as a public school teacher and administrator in Iowa in Manly, Waterloo, Plainfield, Kanawha and Thornton; and in Arizona. in Seligman and Bagdad.

Leroy volunteered to serve his country in the Army, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C., as a paratrooper for three years. Leroy enjoyed spending time with his family, playing card games, computer games, watching the Arizona Diamondbacks and occasionally trying his luck at a slot machine. His family will dearly miss his hugs, smiles, generosity and his sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Lake Havasu City; two sons, David (Julie), of Minneapolis, Minn., and Dan (Becky) of Oshkosh, Wis.; and one daughter, Dana Brubaker, of Altoona, Iowa; a brother, Lloyd (Betty), of Tripoli, Iowa, and brother-in-law, Burton Piehl, of Denver, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Morgan and Judah Scharnhorst, Max Scharnhorst, Lorelai and Amelia Brubaker. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Memorials may be given to Mount Olive Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society. Funeral Services will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m., at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Lake Havasu City.

Leroy Scharnhorst, former superintendent at M-T, Kanawha, dies

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — A former North Iowa superintendent of schools has died. Leroy Scharnhorst, 72, died Monday, Nov. 3, at his home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Scharnhorst was superintendent at Kanawha Community Schools in the 1970s and 1980s and at Meservey-Thornton Community Schools in the 1980s and 1990s.

“He was a wonderful person; just great to work with,” said Connie Stadtlander, who worked with Scharnhorst for many years at Meservey-Thornton. Stadtlander served as his secretary. She said he was dedicated to the community and was active in his church and the Lions Club. “And all our staff really seemed to respect him,” said Stadtlander. “He was very well-liked.”

Scharnhorst was a Waverly native who earned his degree at Wartburg and from there began a 42-year career in education. Before coming to Meservey-Thornton, which is today part of the Sheffield-Chapin School District, Scharnhorst worked for nine years as a superintendent at Kanawha. He also worked as a junior/senior high principal in Plainfield, a junior high math teacher in Waterloo and a high school math teacher at North Central Community Schools in Manly. Funeral services were held earlier in Lake Havasu City. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Wartburg College Chapel on the campus of Wartburg College,Waverly.

Funeral services were held 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Lake Havasu City. A memorial service celebrating Leroy's life will be held 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Wartburg College Chapel on the Wartburg campus in Waverly. All are welcome.
