DECORAH, IA - Glenn D. Kirchner, 69, of Decorah, died on Monday (July 30, 2001) at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, after a lengthy illness. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Decorah, with full military rites at the graveside by the Helof Holm VFW Chapter No. 1977. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, with a VFW Memorial service at 6 p.m., a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. There will be additional visitation from 8 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Glenn Dale Kirchner was born on Feb. 22, 1932, the son of Charles and Maude (Haag) Kirchner in Taopi, Minn. Glenn moved with his family to Ostrander, Minn., and Austin, Minn., and then to Manly, where he attended school. Glenn served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1951-55. He married Dolly Doocy on June 6, 1959, in Manly. Glenn worked for AMPI for 12 years in Mason City before moving to Decorah in 1972. He then worked for the Decorah Creamery until he retired in 1995. Glenn was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, where he served on the parish council and as an usher. Glenn was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as grand knight for two years. He helped support the Decorah Kilties and the Nordic Dancers and was a faithful sports fan. When Glen retired he enjoyed golfing and fishing and especially the time spent with his grandchildren.
Glenn's survivors include his wife, Dolly Kirchner, of Decorah; two daughters, Glenda Moen and her husband, Paul, of Hudson, Wis. and Kaleen Hanson and her husband, Bruce, of Waukon; three sons, Steven Kirchner and his wife, Tessa, of Vail, Colo., David Kirchner and his wife, Laura, of Decorah, and Michael Kirchner, of Rochester, Minn.; his mother, Maude (Kirchner) Pruisman, of Decorah; six grandchildren, Aaron, Mackenzie and Madeline Moen, Kylie Hanson, and Canon and Berit Kirchner; four brothers-in-law, Darvin Hacker, of Decorah, Ron "Red" Eckhardt, of Mason City, Con Doocy, of Mason City, and Armond Doocy, of Duluth, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. Glenn was preceded in death by his father, Charles Kirchner; step-father, Klaas Pruisman; and three sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Hacker, LaDonna Eckhardt and Rhonda Kirchner.
