MASON CITY - Ruth Johnson Nuehring, 99, of 1937 19th St. S.W., died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the I.O.O.F. Home. The funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be given to the Radio Ministry of St. James Lutheran Church.

Ruth Johnson Nuehring was born the first of nine children at Kanawha on Jan. 18, 1901, to John Axel and Taalena Brotton (Anderson) Johnson. She was baptized March 9, 1902, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Nov. 18, 1915, by Pastor H.C. Holm at Kanawha. On Oct. 2, 1919, Ruth married Otto A. Nuehring of Kanawha at his parents' home in Belmond. Their life together was spent farming at Kanawha, Belmond, Goodell, Mason City and Forest City, retiring to Mason City in 1968.

Ruth will be well remembered for her kind and generous spirit. Ruth was known as "Grandma Sugar Cookie" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to bake, sew, crochet, quilt and spending time with family and friends who knew her coffee pot was always on. Ruth was a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Mason City for 61 years, Martha Circle, Friendship Society, and the Freeman Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her children, Orvall Nuehring and his wife, Virginia, of Mason City, Alice Rowe, of Mason City, Robert Nuehring and special friend, Mary Hamson, of Mason City, and Beulah Fairbanks and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Nuehring, of Clear Lake; son-in-law, Herb Steeke, of Perham, Minn.; 23 grandchildren, Larry Olthoff and his wife, Rose, Beverly Ames and her husband, Francis, Leigh Hintzen, Gilbert Hintzen, Randy Hintzen and his wife, Linda, Michael Nuehring and his wife, Barb, Don Nuehring and his wife, Francine, Karen Plagge, Brad Fairbanks and his wife, Pat, Patricia Grandy and her husband, Glenn, Julie Carpenter and her husband, Bob, Tim Nuehring, Kurt Nuehring and his wife, Kathy, Becky Wood and her husband, Tom, David Rowe, Kathy Newman and her husband, Tom, Debby Zobel and her husband, Gary, Sue Larson and her husband, Ed, Jody Thorson and her husband, Allen, Jim Nuehring, Sandy Besch and her husband, Steve, Tom Nuehring and his wife, Sabrina, and Nikki Flaten and her husband, Matt; 47 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in 1981; daughter, Lucille Steeke, in 1997; son, Wilbert Nuehring, in 1999; two sons-in-law, Joe Rowe, in 1998 and Henry Eichman, in 1943; three grandchildren, Kenneth Nuehring, Barbara Eichman and Steven Rowe; one great-grandchild, Mark Olthoff; one great-great-grandchild, Matthew Adkins; four brothers, John, Bert, Alfred and Carl Johnson; four sisters, Edith Johnson, Alice Hummel, Nora Perkins and Esther Hess.
